Electric Current

Concept Explanation

Electric Current

The flow of electricity is known as electric current. An electric current has electric energy. It gets converted into light  and heat energy when current flows through an electric bulb. The  electric current flows from the end of the cell marked as + (positive terminal) through the metal wires, to the end marked - (negative terminal).

Matter is made up of atoms . Each atom consists of electrons, protons and neutrons. electrons have a negative charge.. Certain materials have loosely bound electrons that can be detached from their atoms and they can move around freely. These loosely bound electrons are called free electrons.

When these free electrons are forced to flow in a particular direction. This flow of electrons is a particular direction is called electric current. The conventional direction of flow of current is from  positive to negative terminal..
